Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives for Seniors

PEARLS is a short-term, practical, client-centered mental health coaching program that aims to lessen depression by enhancing problem-solving abilities and promoting physical, social and pleasurable activities. 
 
Developed by the University of Washington Health Promotion Research Center, PEARLS is an evidence-based program that helps older adults with depression or social isolation create happier, healthier lives.  

Who is eligible for PEARLS? Do you need a depression diagnosis to be eligible? 

No diagnosis is required. Adults 60 years and up who are experiencing depression and depression symptoms. 

o Minor depression 

o Major depression 

o Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) 

  • An ongoing, low-grade depression of 2 or more years. 

or 

  • Adults 60 years and up who screen in for social isolation/disconnectedness are also eligible for PEARLS.  

Who is not eligible for PEARLS? 

Conditions that would make a client ineligible for PPSC’s PEARLS program include: 

- Psychosis 

- Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder 

- Bipolar Disorder 

- Substance Abuse or Alcoholism 

- Cognitive Impairment and/or a type of dementia 

Note: A client might still be eligible if their mental health condition is not active and/or not impairing their functioning and ability to engage the specifics of the program. 

How long is the PEARLS program? 

A client is matched with a PEARLS coach who works with them for 7- 8 sessions spanning over 5-6 months. Even after the end of the program, there are monthly follow-up calls to the client for about 6 months.   

How long is a typical PEARLS session? And where do they take place? 

A PEARLS session is about 60 minutes long and will take place in the client's home, at the PPSC office, out in the community, virtually, or by phone.  

What does PEARLS cost? 

FREE. There is no cost for participants to enroll in PEARLS.
