Petaluma People Services Center and Hope Counseling Join Forces to Enhance Mental Health Access

PETALUMA, Calif., November 25, 2024 – In a significant step to expand mental health resources in southern Sonoma County, Petaluma People Services Center (PPSC) announced it will integrate the programs and clients of Hope Counseling starting December 1, 2024. This collaboration seeks to address community mental health needs with greater reach and efficiency, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

Jim Roeters, President of the Board at Hope Counseling, explained the decision: "The work Hope has done in the community has always been invaluable. However, we recognize that by partnering with PPSC, we can do even more to serve those who need it most. To achieve this, the Hope board is dissolving its 501(c)(3) status and transferring clients and programming to PPSC."

PPSC Executive Director Elece Hempel emphasized the importance of the partnership: "Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet many face barriers to accessing care, including limited resources and trained professionals. By advocating for better mental health services, increased funding, and awareness, we can ensure everyone receives the care they deserve. Through this transition, we aim to make the process seamless for clients and employees while expanding the reach of our Community Counseling Clinic."

PPSC, which operates over 95 programs across five service areas—including mental health, senior services, housing, economic sustainability, and community health initiatives like Petaluma Bounty Farm—views this merger as an opportunity to strengthen its impact.

"Together with the dedicated team at Hope Counseling, we envision a future where everyone in our community has access to quality mental health services," Hempel stated.

While acknowledging the challenges of change, Roeters expressed optimism: "Change is hard, but this move ensures that the essential services provided by Hope Counseling will continue to support the community today and in the future."

About Petaluma People Services Center Celebrating 50 years of service, PPSC is committed to improving the social and economic well-being of the Petaluma community by fostering dignity, self-sufficiency, and access to essential resources.
