The Sonoma County Small Claims Advisors Office provides free procedural and legal information to Small Claims litigants regarding their rights and responsibilities under California Law. They help claimants with a variety of issues and disputes. Most common are landlord-tenant disputes, unfulfilled contracts, complaints about contractors and disputes among neighbors. About 50 percent have already filed claims or received a summons. The rest are trying to determine whether they have a case. Additionally, at which time a small claims judgment is issued advisors are available to help with its collection. The Small Claims Court is designed to hear disputes from natural persons valued at $10,000 or less ($5,000 when suits are brought by artificial entities such as trusts, businesses, limited licensed partnerships, or Corporations. With very few exceptions, the parties must represent themselves. Attorneys are only permitted to represent parties during small claims appeals.
