Functional Family Therapy has been approved for Tier 1 inclusion in the Upstream Portfolio.  FFT is an evidence-based family treatment model  that targets the behavior of impulsive, externalizing youth who lack problem solving skills and have poor frustration tolerance. The FFT program assists the youth and the family in making incremental, positive changes that lead to enhanced family functioning and reduced risk.

Families can participate in this program based on the Agency’s sliding scale or referral from the Juvenile Justice Department. The program address: school truancy and suspension, substance abuse, rule breaking, parent/child conflict, legal Issues, failure to comply with probation, juvenile detention and running away. Kira Kayler, Director of Counseling at PPSC says “FFT is family focused and strength-based, it’s a brief treatment model, usually lasting 12-14 sessions”. “PPSC’s FFT therapist takes responsibility for engaging and motivating all family members and constructing a strength-based approach to addressing challenges.”Kayler said.

Elece Hempel, Executive Director of PPSC, stated “PPSC is thrilled to have another one of our quality programs added to Sonoma County Upstream Portfolio of program”.  PPSC has been an early adopter of this policy work, however Hempel shared “it only makes sense, we need to invest early in prevention based programs; invest wisely, ensuring the programs we are providing are successful; and invest together working toward county wide measureable impacts.”  FFT is one of the many programs that PPSC has on the Portfolio of Programs.
