JOB TITLE: Therapist/Associate Therapist, Community Counseling

GENERAL PURPOSE: Counsel individuals, families, couples and groups regarding psychological or emotional problems such as stress, substance abuse, or family situations and develop and implement therapeutic treatment plan by performing the following duties.


Interview and observe client(s) to make an assessment concerning current problem, behavior, relevant history and other pertinent information. Utilize appropriate assessment and treatment planning tools according to funding source. Track and record data as required by funders and PPSC’s agency guidelines.

Train and become certified in CANS and other assessment tools. Plan and administer therapeutic treatment for individuals, families and groups in regard to personal and social problems, and psychosocial, educational, vocational, or behavioral objectives as established in conjunction with a given client. Set concrete and observable goals with specific timelines.

Adopt approach and interventions to suit each client’s needs and/or as specified in prescribed interventions and evidence based practices.

Discuss progress toward goals with client on a regular basis. Consult with collaterals (i.e., doctors, teachers, probation officers) concerning treatment plan and amend plan necessary. Make appropriate referrals as needed to supplement counseling and treatment.

Perform an average of 11-14 billable face-to-face counseling sessions per week (based on .5 FTE). This includes individual, couple and family therapy, collateral sessions, initial assessments or group therapy hours as assigned by the clinical supervisor. As part of job duties, may facilitate groups using a specific curriculum.

Act as a mandated reporter in accordance with California law.

Attend group consultations, staff meetings, trainings and all Agency meetings. If an intern, consult with clinical supervisor for one hour per week of work, and attend two hours of group supervision weekly.

Ability to stay organized, paying close attention to details and procedures.

Interns will be part of a training program designed for individuals to gain experience learning and practicing various psychotherapeutic techniques with individual, group, and family therapy clients.  Growth and improvement will be expected based on quarterly performance evaluations.

Ability and willingness to prepare monthly statistics, meet deadlines for written reports, keep prompt, accurate written accounts of client contact, complete all client paperwork in a timely manner and complete other data required for agency operations or funding.

Complete timesheets accurately, legibly and on time.

Perform telephone intake and/or emergency intake on a schedule agreed upon with the Director of Counseling.

Other duties as assigned.

This position may include travel to off-site locations and client homes. Driving Requirements: This position requires the employee to work out in the community and provide services where PPSC is co-located in the community. Thus, position requires employee to possess a valid CA driver’s license and valid automobile insurance with his/her name on the verification card as an insured driver on the policy at all times. PPSC provides mileage reimbursement when applicable.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: For MFTI or licensed staff, a minimum of M.A. in psychology or equivalent degree and a minimum of one year’s experience in clinical environment. Trainees should have at least 12 semester units towards their MA in an accredited degree program towards MFT licensure.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, coworkers, clients and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: MFTI or licensed staff must have a valid MFTI, CCI, CSW Associate registration or an MFT or LCSW license. Trainee should show proof of enrollment in accredited degree program. Both must have valid driver’s license, good driving record and access to a vehicle for personal transportation.
